How to Brighten a Dark Room

Letting light into your space can allow your spirits to be lifted. If the room you are looking to lighten up feels like a cave right now, use the tips in this article to help spruce things up a bit. Some people feel comfortable living and working in dark spaces for long periods of time, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that is always good for our mental health.

  1. Paint the ceiling with glossy white paint
  2. Use darker colors only for subtle contrast
  3. Create ambient lighting by places table lamps next to walls and other surfaces such as a mirror, cabinet, or furniture
  4. Update your lightbulbs and add room lamps
  5. Mix things up by adding splashes of abstract colors and prints
  6. Change curtains and window treatment to lighter shades
  7. Declutter your space and minimize the amount of furniture
  8. Cover dark floors with light-tones area rugs
  9. Hang a couple of large mirrors to make the room feel bigger and brighter
  10. Minimize the amount of wall art and shelving
